English and National Identity

By Nada Sid Ahmed Eljack.

Languages nowadays have an essential role in shaping and reshaping peoples’ national identities. They have strong relationships with culture, economics, politics, ideologies and discourse. In my presentation; I showed how English language can have a role in promoting global national identity. This was supported by a case study that I carried out between 2007 and 2011, in which the potentiality of a national English language textbook was investigated at school basic level. It was found that in 76.25 per cent of cases, English national syllabus helped to develop the process of national identity construction in learners of 13-14 years.
